Cosí fan tutte

Cosí fan tutte (1790)
WA Mozart | Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte
Performed at the Independent Theatre, July 2015 & The Italian Forum, July 2026
Synopsis
Love, loyalty, and a touch of lunacy come together in Mozart’s mischievous comedy Così fan tutte, where romantic entanglements spiral delightfully out of control.
Fiordiligi and Dorabella are two refined sisters, blissfully in love with their devoted fiancés, Guglielmo and Ferrando. Enter Don Alfonso, a cynical bachelor and self-proclaimed expert in matters of the heart, who bets that the sisters’ affections may not be as unshakable as the young men believe. Eager to prove him wrong, the suitors agree to put their lovers to the test by disguising themselves and courting each other’s sweetheart.
They are not alone in their scheme. Despina, the sisters’ quick-witted maid, is only too happy to lend a hand. With a healthy dose of mischief and more than a few outrageous disguises, including some truly magnificent moustaches, she throws herself into the plot with gusto.
What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, heartfelt confusion, and comic misadventure. As the lines between real love and playful deceit begin to blur, everyone is forced to confront the uncomfortable truth about trust, temptation, and the games we play in the name of love.
