Our Story

Operantics began in 2015 as a grassroots collective of passionate singers, musicians, and creatives, debuting at Sydney’s Independent Theatre with a fresh, vibrant staging of Così fan tutte. Founded on a love of storytelling and a desire to make opera more accessible, Operantics quickly carved out a niche in Sydney’s independent arts scene — offering emerging artists the chance to lead, and hone their craft on  and off stage.

Over the years, we’ve expanded our artistic scope and grown our creative family, welcoming more than a hundred Australian artists to our stages, from rising talents to established performers. Our past productions have ranged from beloved operas such as Così fan tutte, La sonnambula, and Die Fledermaus to curated concert series and Australian premieres of contemporary opera, including Jonathan Dove’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park.

Now a registered charity, Operantics is entering an exciting new chapter — one that builds on our artist-led roots while deepening our commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and community connection. We aim to foster a culture of opera-going in Australia that’s vibrant, curious, and welcoming to all, whether in a theatre, a school hall, a regional venue, or a glass-walled ballroom filled with business leaders.

At its core, Operantics is about possibility: the possibility of new voices, new perspectives, and new ways of experiencing an art form that has always had the power to move, surprise, and delight.
